It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The classic tale of redemption and resurrection as told through the immortal words of Charles Dickens. Dickens brilliantly intertwines the lives of a doctor and his daughter, a French aristocrat, an old bank clerk, a grave robber, an advocate, a spy, and the owners of a wine shop through a commonly shared dark secret, and places the story against the background of the French Revolution. Keeping in the spirit of David Edgar's Nicholas Nickleby, Coculuzzi's adaptation maintains the use of characters narrating Dickens' prose through direct address to the audience. However, Coculuzzi departs from the majority of adaptations of A Tale of Two Cities that use the Carton-Darnay-Lucie love triangle as the central plot. Instead, he restores the book's main line of dramatic action through the use of Dr. Manette and his dark secret, re-creating the masterful sense of mystery and suspense that Dickens had always intended. In doing so, the love triangle is raised to a level of epic sacrifice and salvation worthy of the closing lines by Sydney Carton.
