When Steve Bramley gets back from work and slumps in front of the television, he certainly doesn't reckon on the bizarre consequences of idly flicking from channel to channel... The play begins with a phone being answered by Ann Bramley. On the other end is Helen, a woman who Ann and Steve met on holiday in France. Helen virtually invites herself and her husband round later on that evening. Steve arrives home a few minutes later and settles down in front of the television. He watches the weather forecast with little interest, then switches over using the remote control. The point at which he cuts from the weather forecast to the programme on another channel creates a kind of hybrid dialogue. This Ann interprets as a comment on an affair she suspects Steve had with Helen while on the holiday. Steve refutes this and continues to switch from channel to channel. Disturbingly though, as he switches furiously, it seems to be creating a continuous dialogue which contradicts his protestations of innocence. Finally, Steve switches to a quiz show - which has Helen and her husband in the final. This adds fuel to the fire as far as Ann if concerned; interrupted only by the door bell. It is, of course, Helen and her husband Richard. As they enter the sitting room Ann virtually ignores then while Steve is sycophantically pleasant to Helen. Ann now switches rapidly from channel to channel as Steve had done and she too creates a continuous dialogue. But this time the message is one for Helen.
