An Ionesco / Churchill-esque theatrical amalgamation of the films The Last Safari, Elephant Walk, A Streetcar Named Desire (with hints of Suddenly, Last Summer and Boom!) and pure imagination. Agatha Christie, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Jim Thompson, William S. Burroughs, Stewart Granger, Gerald Hanley and Tennessee Williams inspired the characters. The Writer of potboilers churns out uninspired fiction as two British expatriates, Agatha and the Colonel, painfully reveal their fading memories; meanwhile, a Film Crew shoots scenes from a movie about a Great White Hunter and the elephant that trampled his best friend to death as the Actress, famous for her Southern Belle roles, wanders the Tea Garden at night counting the stars as she slips into dementia. Her Hollywood rival eventually replaces her and the film is able to be finished. The final scene of Elephant Opera is a test of memory; the first scene of the play repeats, with the actors reversing all the "couples" roles. Elephants stampede the Tea Garden and "Toejam" is equivalent to "Eureka" as the play ends as quietly as it began.
