About the Writer I HAVE been a journalist all my life. I started in the UK in Nottingham as a general reporter but soon got a feeling for showbiz.
I began to write theatre and movie reviews and meet many of the stars of the time. People like Tom Jones, The Beatles, Muhammad Ali, Peter O'Toole and many, many more movie stars.
I worked for TV Times magazine in the UK and moved to Melbourne in 1970. There I worked on TV Times and TV Week magazines. The Logies was always a big three days of mixing with superstars like John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Gina Lollobrigida, Charlton Heston, Bette Midler. The list goes on.
But finally, the days of canapés and vodka took its, toll. My health began to suffer.
I moved to Brisbane in 1982 to “get away from showbiz”. It lasted until 1985 when went on stage for the first time and began writing in earnest. I began to do theatre crits for the Catholic Leader Newspaper and later for the Westender and Suzie G’s Web page.
Now of course I do a weekly spot on Spectrum on Radio 4EB FM98.1 and run my own website, www.absoluetheatre.com.au
I am what you might call a late starter in play writing, although my first novel was published in 1976. That was a adult book called The Soundmixers.
I didn’t complete my first play until 1985, and that was a stage adaptation of The Soundmixers, which I called Just a Ten Percenter. Since then I have had eleven one-act plays for teenagers published in two volumes by Pearson Education, Take Five and Five More, which are standard fare in most high schools around the country. These plays are now available individually for sale from my web site.
Maverick Musicals published my other one-act youth play, Windsong.
During this time, as well as the play series I also had published a teenage novel called Time Trek and a Storybridge book for UQP called The Great Fairytale Robbery, which is also a stage musical. Since then I have written many more plays, adult comedies and dramas and children’s musical plays.
Almost everything I have written has been produced, most in amateur theatre but some as profit share ventures. And every one has seen the companies make a healthy profit after playing to good houses. Writing is my passion. I am highly involved with theatre and film as an actor, director and professional critic, with many theatre companies. |
