A lawyer and a teacher struggle against creeping totalitarianism which threatens to engulf them. After each of them is discredited by their efforts to prosecute the killers of an abortionist and a mercy-killer doctor, they find themselves in the State Prison on unspecified charges. There they face rehabilitation attempts by the lawyer’s deranged sister and by an equally deranged priest. The climax of the play is centered on the couple’s escape and their affirmation of individual freedom in the face of collectivists who seek to enslave the productive through linguistic debasement, environmental myopia and aesthetic nihilism. Hailed by critics as a comic nightmare — an avant garde play that mocks avant garde plays.
