Both plays have been performed by Year 10 (N.Z) students aged between 14 and 15 years as part of their Drama Course. Both one act plays are based on those written by Sophocles. 'Oedipus - the tragedy' concerns the events in Oedipus's life and his marriage to his Mother, Jocasta, as prophesised by her husband King Laius of Thebes and the Oracle, and to Jocasta's eventual suicide. The second play 'Antigone', Oedipus's daughter, concerns her desire to have the body of her treacherous brother, Polynices, buried in accordance with the customary burial rites, the refusal of such a burial by her uncle, King Creon of Thebes and Antigone's eventual death. The plays lend themselves to introducing students to the stories upon which the original plays were based and to enacting the tales in a contemporary theatrical style.
