Inspired by the BBC's Shakespeare retold series I decided to do a Bible retold story. This is my take on how the Story of Joseph from the Bible would look if it happened today.
Jake has five sons Jud, Dan, Simon, Jo and Benjy and a daughter Dinah. He and four of his sons are property developers. Jake has built the business up from nothing. Each son has a property portfolio to look after. Jo is Jakes favourite and gets special treatment.
The story begins with the rape of Jo's sister Dinah. Jud displays his violent character, determined to take revenge. He and his two brothers Simon and Dan carry out the most brutal of murders on the man who violated their sister.
The story progresses to it's second chapter which focuses on the relationship between Jo and his brothers. Jo receives a beautiful leather jacket from his father which arouses intense feelings of jealousy from his brothers. Jo has a dream one night about how one day he will rule over his brothers. This makes them furious and increases the tension between them. On a business trip to Egypt Jo's brothers decide to teach Jo a lesson and have him kidnapped. They hire a deadly gang with a reputation for brutality to carry out the act. They make them promise not to harm their brother but to just give him a scare!
The girlfriend of the head kidnapper falls for Jo and makes a pass at him but he refuses her advances. This infuriates her and she accuses Jo of trying to rape her. The head kidnapper is outraged and gives him a severe beating. He them bribes a Judge to have Jo thrown in Jail. The kidnappers fake Jo's death and his brothers return to Israel thinking their brother is dead.
God delivers Jo from prison. He interprets a dream for the Head of the national bank. God reveals that a massive world recession is coming. Jo is then promoted to the role of vice chairman of the bank and is charged with organising to stockpile the funds that will get them through the coming recession.
As the recession worsens people from every corner of the globe come to Jo for funds including his brothers who do not recognise him.
They come looking for a loan to finish a building project. Jo sees his chance for revenge and plots to have his brothers arrested. First though he tricks them into bringing his younger brother Benjy down to Egypt. He refuses to give them any money until he sees their other brother.
They return to Egypt with Benjy and are well treated. Jo promises to transfer the funds they need and sends them on their way. At the airport the next day however they are arrested and taken into custody charged with the kidnap and murder of their brother Jo.
When they appear in court Jud stuns everyone by confessing to what they did to their brother. Jo can no longer remain silent and he reveals himself to his brothers who can't believe their eyes.
In the final touching scene Jo is reunited with his father who receives him as though risen from the dead.
