Strindberg's classic from the turn of the 20th century revolutionized modern theatre, and was central to the directing careers of major directors in theatre from Max Reinhardt to Ingmar Bergman. Influenced by eastern philosophy and spiritual mysticism, the play reveals all the projection of Mind, and the illusory nature of our experience. Yet it does so with brilliantly theatrical images, absurdist humor (many absurdists and expressionists have written of their debt to this play) all within a structure that resembles that of music. Though Strindberg did not like all the sets at the premiere -- after the age of "the empty space" in theatre work, there has been an explosion of productions of this play in dozens of languages all around the globe and in many forms: from puppet theater, to environmental theatre, stagings with Indian music and acting styles; and in contemporary settings. Indra's Daughter descends as sort of avatar to earth to live an entire human lifetime, so she might return to the divine realm and explain the nature of human suffering. She interviews people passing in and out of an opera house; joins other characters in their memories and their dreams to understand their minds; discovers how they are all stuck with various obsessions and attachments; and becomes a conventional housewife to a public defender, the Advocate, which suppresses her spiritual side—and involves an almost satirical take on Strindberg’s own famous portrayals of the battle of the sexes. She takes off on travels to try to liberate human beings. Eventually "All Right-Thinking People" condemn her for challenging to narrowness of human knowledge and trying to reveal that the nature of our existence is emptiness. She escapes the stoning demanded by the Deans of the University –but grows wise in her old age and tries to expound on what she has discovered to her companion, the Poet, before going to the ritual pyre for her final ascent. This new translation, successfully produced and critically praised in the US, is based on the most accurate version in the new Swedish national edition of Strindberg’s 72 plays and other works; it includes Strindberg’s breakdown of the play into small units of action.
