About the Writer Miriam Gallagher is an awardwinning playwright, novelist & screenwriter. Her work, staged and screened in Ireland, London, Paris, New York, South Africa & Australia, is profiled in Irish Women Writers: An A-Z Guide (2006, Greenwood Press, CT, USA). She has written over 25 plays. Theatrical/Musical Interludes celebrating Irish composers (Carolan; Field; Wallace; Balfe) were performed at Dublin’s National Concert Hall, on Rté Radio and at festivals abroad. Miriam has worked in professional, prison and community theatre. The Gold of Tradaree is the first play awarded under the Per Cent for Art Scheme and The Parting Glass was a prizewinner at Near & Far International Playwrighting Competition (USA). Girls in Silk Kimonos (feature length screenplay celebrating the Gore Booth sisters) received Arts Council and European Script Fund awards. Her film Gypsies was screened at New York’s Lincoln Center and San Francisco’s Plaza Cinemas and also broadcast by Rté. Books include: Fancy Footwork (13 Plays) Kalahari Blues (3 Plays) The Gold of Tradaree (3 Plays) Song for Salamander (a novel) Pusakis at Paros (short stories) and Let’s Help Our Children Talk (non fiction). She has given many writing courses and readings, including Northern Ireland readings and workshops in Belfast, Omagh and Donegal.
Miriam has served as vice president and committee member of Irish PEN, as council member of the Society of Irish Playwrights and committee member of the Irish Writers Union. She has also served on the awards panel of Arts & Disability Forum. She has been a guest lecturer at universities in Ireland, Athens, New York, Boston and Pretoria.
