The play is set in Dublin in 1997, and is a rites of passage story about a young teenager called Sean. At the beginning of the play Sean's life seems to be going nowhere. Everyone thinks he's a loser and a no-hoper, including his own father and teachers. A sudden impulse to buy a pony with his grandfather's birthday money changes Sean's life forever.
Sean keeps the purchase of the horse a secret from his family. in the meantime he discovers he has a natural flare for riding. However, tragedy soon strikes when Sean realises that his pony must be put down, together with the many more unstabled horses roaming the streets of Dublin at that time. Sean is heartbroken by the loss of his horse, but in the meantime he meets a race horse owner who has spotted Sean's potential as a rider and has agreed to train him as a jockey. Several years later Sean becomes a successful jockey, and is able to look back to the purchase of his pony as the turning point of his life.
