About the Writer Born and raised in Manchester, Paul read English at Leeds University, and holds graduate degrees from Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California. His Vanderbilt thesis on director Peter Brook was later published in New Theatre Quarterly. At USC, he gained a master’s degree in play/film/fiction writing from the Professional Writing Program and studied with writers Hubert Selby Jr, Jerome Lawrence and John Rechy.
He lived in Los Angeles from 1990-2000 and wrote over 400 theatre reviews, firstly for the “LA Village View” for whom he conducted a number of interviews, including Samuel L. Jackson. From 1997, he was a freelance theatre critic for the “LA Weekly”. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and the Playwrights Voice Ensemble. He wrote film reviews for Magill’s Cinema Annual and was film editor for “The Big Issue Los Angeles” for two years, penning monthly film pieces highlighting independent and foreign releases. Back in London, he published over 50 theatre reviews for www.whatsonstage.com and “The Stage”.
His short plays have been seen in London, Los Angeles, Miami, Detroit, Orlando, and New York City. |
