In the smouldering, fatal days of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a young resistance fighter, Ruti, shares a cellar with a religious older man, Weiss. Both are waiting for death, but on their own terms. Ruti wants only to live to kill more Germans; Weiss waits for a spiritual deliverance from his earthly hell. Then Ruti drags into the cellar a young, wounded, German soldier. Her desire is to execute him in front of Weiss, but the older man finds himself struggling with Ruti over the fate of one of the footsoldiers of their mutual enemy. This 30 minute play was first produced at the 23rd Annual Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival, Harold Clurman Theatre, New York, in April 1998, and has also been seen in Silver Spring, Maryland and Orlando, Florida.
