"A Native Lad" is a play about Alaska history developed thanks to funding from the Alaska Humanities Forum. The play consists of 17 short scenes from different periods in Alaska history that take approximately five minutes each to perform, so schools can perform individual scenes or the entire play. The play is told from the point of view of Benny Benson, who designed Alaska’s flag at the age of 13 in 1926. Benny shows the scenes from history to a present-day high school student, Abigail, who has just received her Permanent Fund Dividend check and hasn’t really thought about where it came from or how Alaska became a state. Much of the play’s focus is on the events leading up to statehood because the grant that funded it was part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood. The Native struggle for civil rights and land ownership is another prominent theme of the play. All of the characters in the play are based on real people, except for Abigail.
