One Cloud tells the story of Stella Harper, a young and dynamic woman who constantly finds herself too much for her skin to bear. She drinks too much, she swears too much, and she takes up too much space for one person. Constantly rejected and tossed aside, she flees to a small secluded island nicknamed Paradise in a last ditch attempt to find her place in the world.
On arrival she is saved from the bottom of the ocean by Pup, reluctant heir to Paradise since the death of his father. At first Stella is regarded with awe by the younger members of Paradise who marvel and fawn over her clothes and jewellery and her ‘difference’. However, she is considered by the older women to be an obstacle to the careful and planned traditions of the island, traditions that ensure the survival of the women but never allow them to rise above being muted, second class citizens, chained to the brutality of life on a closed island and the boredom of never being allowed to challenge the status quo.
As Stella and Pup begin a romance, the other women on the island work in earnest opposition to maintain the status quo and ensure that their lives are not thrown away by this outsider who never seems to understand the rules. Slowly, Stella’s actions and behaviour ensure that she begins to fight a war of difference with all the women, while her very presence seems to dig up questions and secrets from the women that threaten to crumble the foundations of Paradise.
Pup quickly finds himself at the heart of this escalating war between his world and the world that Stella represents, and failing to find answers to keep either side happy. In order to bring peace and stability to his island, and take his rightful position as leader, he commits a violent, tragic act that forever changes the island and the people that inhabit it.
Based on a true story from the small island, Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean, One Cloud explores the meaning of family, the value of difference and the quest for identity.
