Five women are gossiping on the phone. One woman deliberately spreads lies about a sixth woman we never see who is, ultimately, forced out of town. From spring to summer to fall, depicted through clothing and lighting changes, events are thoroughly distorted with gossip until the most innocent dupes carry out the worst actions. Because the women are always on the phone in their own homes, the play can be performed as a Reader's Theatre, a Radio Play or can be fully or partially staged (i.e. some limited blocking using hidden scripts behind phones.) Who is responsible for what ultimately happens? Could the outcome have been avoided? Why don’t the women challenge what they hear? What is it about gossip that people enjoy? 'Talk' is a natural favorite with audiences. Its subject is immediately familiar and its weightier message delivered with enough wit to be enjoyable even as the audience senses its larger implications. Working with students has proven especially interesting with this play because it sparks intense discussions about gossip and bullying and their effects.
