| Written by Trace Crawford |
"How to Succeed in Romance without Really Connecting" explores the nature of dating in the age of Facebook and how living in a society in which the average person is on video at least eight times a day has fundamentally altered who we are as a people.
Beginning as a light parody of How to Succeed in Business..., the play quickly transforms into a broad satire about not only the state of 21st century relationships, but also the very condition of our modern voyeuristic existence.
A man prepares for his first date in a long time with the aid of a self-help book. Her arrival, complete with sex toys, a webcam and more illustrates that modern romance and all the trappings that go with it do far more to alienate us from one another than to connect. The final climactic moments even bring the audience into the world of the play in the ultimate exhibitionistic thrill.
Both hilarious and thought provoking, "How to Succeed in Romance…" is a salacious social satire sure to get an audience's attention.
This play received an Honorable Mention by the Eclectic Theatre Company in their 2010 Hurricane Season Competition.
